Language + culture, in comics
Learn the hard languages, one comic at a time.
Komiro turns everyday moments into short comics with native audio and tappable text. You pick up the words and the unspoken rules: when to be polite, how to greet an elder, what not to point at. Starting with Mandarin.
Tap a word to see what it means.
🏮 Culture: Kai uses 您 (nín), the polite “you,” because Wang is his teacher. 你 (nǐ) would sound too casual.
This is the real reading layer: pinyin ruby, tap to define, translation, and native audio.
Why we built this
Machines translate now. They don’t teach you how to belong.
The words are the easy part. Your phone already does those. The hard part is register, etiquette, and the small customs that mark you as a guest or a local. Komiro treats culture as a subject, not a footnote. Every comic shows how people actually speak to each other, and every checkpoint asks whether you read the room, not just the sentence.
How a lesson works
Four steps, and the story levels up with you.
Read the comic
A short, everyday scene acted by a recurring cast. Not a word list, but a moment you’ll actually live.
Understand every line
Tap any word for its meaning and audio. Ruby pinyin sits above the characters; switch it off as you grow. Simplified or traditional, your call.
Hear it spoken
Native audio with real rhythm: a pause after a name, at commas, at the end of a thought. Never a robot reading a list.
Prove you got it
Checkpoints test the language and the culture, including spot-the-faux-pas: find the mistake in the panel. Adaptive review brings it back before you forget.
What makes Komiro different
Everything here earns its place in the panel.
Culture as a subject
Etiquette, register, customs and taboos. Taught and tested, not tucked into a footnote.
Built for tough scripts
Ruby pinyin today, furigana next. The reading aids that make Mandarin and Japanese approachable instead of frightening.
An engine that adapts
Spaced review and quiz-driven leveling change one thing at a time: more words, longer sentences, or fewer aids.
Personalized to what you love
Dinosaurs, cooking, football: your interests steer the stories. Every lesson says so, right on the page.
Native audio, real rhythm
One consistent voice per character, punctuated to breathe like a person, so pronunciation sticks.
A cast you’ll remember
The same characters across situations, so new language always lands in familiar company.
Especially the complicated ones
The languages other apps make you dread.
Tones, honorifics, three genders and four cases. The languages with the steepest first cliff are exactly where comics and culture help most. A picture holds the context a flashcard can’t.
Mandarin
HSK-leveled, simplified and traditional, tone-aware pinyin, and culture from greetings to gift-giving.
Japanese
Furigana over kanji, and keigo, the politeness levels that textbooks introduce far too late.
Icelandic
Cases and grammar hints in context, for one of Europe’s most beautifully stubborn languages.
…and as many more as we can. The engine is language-agnostic by design.
Private by design
Made for a family, built for everyone.
Komiro started with one dad and his son. Kids get parent-managed profiles, no chat, and no free text ever leaving the device. Pick Local mode and the whole thing runs offline with no account. Or go Online for cloud-generated, native-checked content.
